Rocket Fuel for Runners
When the earth first rolled forth in its purity from the hand of its creator, Adam and Eve dwelled in peace, with none to harm or destroy on all the Lord’s holy mountain. Food was all vegetable, blood was never shed, and flesh was never eaten. The journey of man from the Garden into the lone and dreary world, and back to the earth’s pure and redeemed state, requires a restorative where the progression of dynamic ideals are not eternally blocked, but through increased righteousness, holiness is restored to its original state.
This journey of ascension, recreation, and regeneration includes general, moral, and intellectual advancements that will increase to the overcoming of everything opposed to the kingdom of heaven. This occurs as we first gain an understanding of the laws of God, and then through obedience, we gain knowledge of how his laws work unto salvation from our fallen state. Then, as we apply this redeeming knowledge to our daily lives, we ascend to lay hold upon power that enables us to live by each law that governs heaven.
As we are thus made holy, the earth under our feet becomes holy, and we are filled with the Spirit of God. We become kind to all animals, and they are filled with peace, and the soil of the earth brings forth in its strength, and the fruits thereof become meat for man and animals. The more purity that exists in the hearts of men, the less strife and more peace fills the earth, and the savage nature of brute creation vanishes away as dews before the sun.
Saints who eat like Daniel, while walking in obedience to God, ascend from grace to grace until they come to live by every law that governs heaven. Thus, they lay hold upon all blessings associated with God’s highest laws. Herein is the millennium, which will spread from one heart that has been made pure and holy, to another, until holiness fills the whole earth, even as the stone Daniel saw in vision, that rolled forth from a mountain, without hands, to overcome all prior kingdoms that were obtained with hands by war, bloodshed, conquest, and compulsion (or the arm of flesh), and not by the power holiness.
If it is your desire to enjoy the Lord’s highest blessings of health, to become holy, and to bear powerful fruits that will help enable the earth to become redeemed and restored to its former pure state, then accept the Lord’s invitation to eat like Daniel, and walk in perfect obedience to God’s commandments.

Thank you very much for your Word of Wisdom series. I have read through them several times and for the most part, your ideas sit very well with me in relationship to the Word of Wisdom. I do have one question. In one of the parts, you mentioned that there was no killing of animals until after the flood. The scriptures say that Adam offered animal sacrifices (the story of Cain and Able for example), and that when Adam & Eve left the Garden, they were given clothing of "skins."
So, I would guess that they continued to use "skins" for clothing which would require the killing of animals. Whether they ate the meat from those animals, I know not.
I would appreciate your thoughts on this.

I have also been wondering about this. Also it says that the people at the time of Adam kept herd of cattle and sheep (able was a sheppard). Why would they keep cattle and sheep if not to eat them, use their skins, drink milk etc? I agree with eating this way and am not trying to challenge it, just trying to understand better. Increase my knowledge. thanks for any thoughts you can offer.

Hi Sharey,
The first time flesh is mentioned as food in scripture is in Genesis chapter 9, a full 1657 years after the Lord describes what is to be meat for man in Genesis 1:29, which are the herbs and fruits of the earth. The Joseph Smith Translated Version of Genesis 9 gives the account of Noah and his Sons being given permission to shed blood of animals and to eat their flesh, which was conditioned upon a need for it in order to save their lives. God also warns them that the blood of every beast will be required of them. Then and today, the Lord has tied our use of flesh to times of calorie deprivation, when we need flesh to supply the abundance needed to live and thrive.
In D&C 49:21 the Lord warns of woes that will attend the shedding of blood and the wasting of flesh without need.
“And wo be unto man that sheddeth blood or that wasteth flesh and had no need (D&C 49:21) What does it mean to shed blood and waste flesh without need? To waste is to expend something extravagantly, to no useful purpose. There are many levels of waste. For example, to kill a buffalo to save saints crossing the plains in the cold winter months is neither wasteful nor sinful. However to kill a buffalo for its hide, while leaving its flesh to rot upon the earth, is both wasteful and sinful. This begs the question, “Is it ever wasteful to eat flesh?”
The U.S. Dietary Reference Guide states that an average male of 155 pounds uses only 6 grams of protein per day for cellular growth and repair (see sections on Protein and on Famines). All other protein consumed, whether from flesh or plant, is broken down and excreted from the body, without any useful purpose being made of it.
All animal protein that is excreted from the body in this manner, burdens the body. How so? Animal protein contains up to 14 times more sulfur-containing amino acids than plant protein. Sulfur is released from the broken down animal protein and is converted to sulfuric acid. This acid causes the body to use its calcium reserves (a strong base) to neutralize the acid, which leads to osteoporosis, kidney stones, and other diseases that are common to meat eaters. By comparison, excess plant protein does not lead to disease, because it is contain far less sulfur-containing amino acids.
What happens to animal protein in periods of calorie deprivation? The U.S. Dietary Reference Guide instructs that of 55 grams of daily protein recommended for the average American male, in times of a famine, or calorie deprivation, the 49 grams not used for growth and repair is converted to sugar, and is used as fuel for the body. Animal flesh enables the body to thrive in times of famine and excess of hunger (calorie deprivation), yet woes (i.e. disease) occur when we shed blood and eat flesh beyond a true physiological need for it.
We are instructed to eat fruits and vegetables in their seasons, to eat flesh sparingly, and that it pleases the Lord when we forbear to eat flesh, except during periods of calorie deprivation. We are also instructed that grains are the staff of life. If Paul were alive today, he would likely warn us against those who teach that man should abstain from grains and use flesh as their primary staple (e.g. Paleo and Atkin”s diets), leading saints to have a calloused indifference towards God’s creatures that leads to the shedding of blood and wasting of flesh without any true need for it. Such diets are doctrines of devils, because they stand in direct opposition to God’s word.
Regarding Adam and Even and the garments. God introduced the laws of obedience and of sacrifice to Adam and Even. They were taught that sin, or disobedience to eternal law, requires a blood atonement and the price of sin is death. Animal Sacrifices did not pay the price for sin, but was only a similitude of the great and last blood sacrifice that would be made by the Son of God.
Ultimately, the price for human sin must be paid by human blood, and ultimately the only way to escape sin is not by the perpetual sacrificing of animals, but by meeting the conditions of the atonement, as described in Letter 4 of Back to Strong.
Milk is a subject of its own, which is addressed more fully in Original Fast Foods. It can be a useful food, but it also has been demonstrated to cause much harm. Generally speaking, it is a food we are better off leaving out of our diets considering the facts involved with commercial milk today. Also, its protein causes the same problems that are caused by protein in flesh. Today's milk is an inferior and often even a dangerous product when compared to the milk from sheep, goats, and the type of cattle that existed at the time of Adam.
Remember also, cattle partnered with Adam and his children in the tilling the ground and the production of food for man and animals, who enjoyed the fruits of the earth together. To assume that animals were used as food prior to the Flood is not supported anywhere in scriptures. All references to animals as food, are post-flood. The permission to eat flesh and the fear of man among animals occurred 1657 years after Adam was instructed regarding foods that were to be his meat, which did not include the flesh of animals.
More importantly, we have been invited to limit our use of flesh to times of calorie deprivation or when it is needed to save our lives, be it any condition we might face. Sparingly is arbitrary, but this invitation to please the Lord is tied to millennial law. The invitation to become a generation like Daniel, is an invitation to become a millennial generation, as described above. I believe this should be our foremost desire.
