Lifestyle Support for Healthier Living

Gift # 4 - Walk for Life

Walk for Life

God gave us bodies that are designed to move. The heart pumps nutrients to the cells to support metabolism. Metabolism is the sum of all chemical reactions that take place within the cells, which enable them to survive and thrive. By-product wastes of metabolism then exit the cells and enter into the interstitial fluids and subsequently into the lymph system where waste is carried away and eliminated from the body. Moving waste out of the body is dependent upon physical activity and is a primary reason Hippocrates said, “Walking is man’s best medicine.”

Thomas Jefferson also attributed his excellent health to a habit of walking every day. And today's healthiest populations of Icaria, Greece; Sardinia, Italy; and Okinawa, Japan do not engage in high-impact exercises. Rather, they walk everywhere they go, to work, to play, to visit neighbors, to shop, or to go to church.

As you do similarly, walk at an age appropriate heart rate for burning fat (see Exercise Zones below), which as you can see below is a relaxed pace, one that enables you to think, to ponder, to pray, to talk with a walking partner, and so forth. While there are numerous ways to move your body, walking always as been and always will be the "best" and most natural form of body movement that promotes fat-buring.

As your heart rate exceeds the fat-burning rate, you burn more glycogen and less fat. By comparison, a relaxed walk that is within your age fat-burning pace causes you to burn much more fat. Enjoy unlimited walking and at least 30 to 60 minutes daily at your fat-burning pace.

Colleen and I would like to invite you to prayerfully set a goal to walk a certain number of miles in the next six months. That number will be determined by you. Some of the things I love to do while walking are to listen to great audio recordings. For example we listen to holy writ daily as we walk; we enjoy great classics, listen to God's living oracles and to other inspiring speakers, or sometimes take a child and listen to all that is in their heart, their hopes, their desires, their questions, and so forth.

And, we like to choose to walk where it is private and we feel very inspired in nature. It is a time for prayer, for reflection, for being filled to overflowing with gratitude, joy, and love to my heavenly father. It is a time when we are able to ask and receive much from the Father, both inspiration and revelation. It is a time when ministering angels visit and teach from on high. It is a time that each of you can enjoy fully insomuch that you will never look at it as exercise, but as your oh so sweet hour of prayer
