Lifestyle Support for Healthier Living
To protect us from the evil designs of conspiring men, we are invited to receive by exercise of our agency alone, and not by constraint, the following counsels and attendant covenant promises:
Seven Counsels and Seven Promises
Let’s review the covenant promises that are conditioned upon obedience to the above counsels:
The great purpose of God’s counsels to us regarding his laws of health are that our bodies may be made fit tablernacles wherein his Spirit may dwell, which will assist us in our path to be made his heirs. While he desires that we enjoy good health, his aim is to help us become his heirs, not simply to be healthy. Of the seven counsels given by him, six enable the mortal tabernacle to be a fit dwelling place for his Spirit. The seventh counsel, to keep his commandments, is known throughout holy writ as the qualifier to receive God’s Spirit. Ponder deeply upon all that the Holy Ghost “is”.
The Savior’s counsels on physical health and obedience to his commandments are given that we may be made recipients of all that he is according to God’s wisdom, mercy, truth, justice, and judgement concerning that which we are worthy, willing, and able to receive of him. Ponder these counsels and promises carefully and consider the great blessings that are reserved for all who will do the minimums God asks in order that your body may be made a house wherein the Holy Ghost may dwell. Dietary extremes can never quicken you to the extent you will be quickened if you do these sayings and also keep God's commandments.

Comment by James Simmons on June 4, 2012 at 2:04pm I've also pondered upon why it pleases the Lord when we do not eat animals, except in times of cold, winter, and famine. While cross-referencing to many things he has said about the use of flesh or animals for food, clothing, and so forth, it is clear that this earth has been prepared to meet the needs of man. Need is a relative term, except when you consider the true physiological needs of metabolism and certain phycological needs. If we don't need to shed blood, we are command not to and are told that if we waste flesh or shed blood without need a woe will come upon us (D&C 49:20). Physiologically, science has demonstrated the process for how more animal protein than we need brings of woe of poor health upon us. Psychologically, the Lord has also ordained their use for our enjoyment or pleasure. Various creeds talk about how we are not to call something evil that the Lord has ordained for our use. Rather, we ought to come to understand what "true need" is and act accordingly and with great thanksgiving. For example, without some animal-based foods in the wintertime, the only other option for obtaining Vitamin B-12 and adequate vitamin D is to supplement. In a famine, excess animal protein consumed converts to sugar in the absence of sufficient carbohydrates. In the cold, animal-based foods are thermogenic and help us hold a higher body heat. I don't presume to know what is pleasing to God, but as a father it is pleasing to me when my children receive and enjoy what I prepare for them, and enjoy it according to need rather than to consume it upon their lusts. Finally, I've considered the Hebrew meaning of the command to be good stewards over this earth, or to exercise dominion over the earth. It is a meaning that suggests a responsibility to fill space with life and beauty. For example, if I own a home, yard, farm, and so forth, to make the most of enabling that dominion to promote goodness, beauty, life, and so forth. I'm sure that the birds and bees, insects, bugs, and all forms of animal life give great joy to the Lord as they do to many of us and when we are good stewards over these things, I'm sure this is also very pleasing to Him, because it foretells what we will do as his heirs, if we so qualify.

Comment by Joyce Kinmont on June 4, 2012 at 10:09am Terrific article! The Word of Wisdom diet is so simple.
I wonder why the Lord is pleased when we don't eat animals? Maybe it is because animals carry bacteria and viruses and He is happy when we aren't sick. Maybe He's pleased when we can avoid killing. The footnote 21a in D&C 49 tells us we'll be held accountable. For me it's about sixteen years of not having the semi-annual bouts of strep and bronchitis and other respiratory diseases.
In any case, I thank you for your wonderful website.
