In Dr. Esselstyn's practice he has his heart patients consume only fruits, vegetables, grains, and legumes until they have entirely overcome heart disease; even then, the only overt fats he allows into the diet is a sparing use of nuts, avocado, olives and so forth. By so doing his clients entirely overcome heart disease. They also overcome all blood-sugar related issues, like chronic fatigue, adrenal fatigue, Candida, and elevated blood-sugar levels. Feel free to send me a personal message on the website to address your training questions with me. I'm glad you found the book and this supportive website to be useful. I've hoped that more and more people will realize that this is one of the best supported books in dietary lifestyle today. Thanks!

Welcome to the website LeeAnna and thank you for the kind letter. As I read your letter, I couldn't help but think of some NCAA champion swimmers that came from Dr. Caldwell Esselstein's family. He is a doctor who recommends a dietary lifestyle that is nearly identical to that which we recommend. His children were champion swimmers in college and I have  few thoughts about superior performance for athletes I can share with you.

      1. First, recovery is a primary issue when it comes to training and improving one's athletic performance. As you move towards a more natural plant-based diet, the dietary burden your body will endure will diminish considerably. It doesn't require as much time or energy to digest plant-based foods when compared to animal-based foods on a per calorie basis and therefore more energy is able to be directed toward rebuilding and recovery.
      2. Adrenal fatigue is a symptom of too much fat in a diet. Fat interferes with insulin sensitivity and the ability to transport blood sugars out of the bloodstream. A low fat vegan or nearly vegan diet will cut back considerably on adrenal fatigue. As you read Chapter Three of Original Fast Foods, please take the time to understand the link between sugar addiction and stable blood-sugar levels. When you eat in a manner that preserves stable blood-sugar levels, it goes a long ways toward overcoming sugar addictions.
      3. The fatigue you are experiencing indicates a lack of sufficient energy production in the cells. When this occurs one must ask, why am I producing insufficient energy? The most logical conclusion is that sugar that is used in sugar production is flowing to the cells too slowly. Why would this occur? Well, adrenal fatigue is directly linked to the overproduction of adrenalin, which occurs when we are insulin resistant, which occurs when there is too much fat in our blood. Fat disrupts insulin's ability to connect to blood-sugar molecules.
